Sit Stand Sing

You Are Here: Mapping the Fracking Resistance and DIRECT ACTION Training Tour

Throughout May, June and July 2019, Sane Energy Project and 350.org traveled across New York on the ‘Sit, Stand Sing’ tour.

This tour is a collaboration with communities featured on the You Are Here map  of fracking infrastructure. Each tour stop entailed trainings on organizing skills like strategy, direct action and movement building.

Our goal was to connect communities across the state to build the sustainable and renewable world we know is possible.

Hunger Strike Climate Strike

STOP THE WILLiAMS PIPELINE, CUOMO

Tuesday, May 14, 2019 - Thursday, May 16, 2019 New Yorkers began a 3-day Climate Hunger Strike in front of Governor Cuomo’s Midtown Manhattan office on Tuesday morning ahead of New York State’s May 16 permitting deadline for the Williams NESE fracked gas pipeline proposed for New York Harbor.

Offshore Wind is now a reality for New York. Stay in the loop on offshore wind as it develops! On July 18, 2019, Governor Cuomo announced the first 1700 megawatts of offshore wind, and in true New York style: with union labor agreements, and a clear plan for marine life safety and care. Our persistence paid off.

As a founding member of the WinWindNY coalition, Sane Energy Project advocates for Wind power. We have published letters to Andrew Cuomo and Bill De Blasio, urging them to commit to offshore wind and join the fight to move New York to 100% renewable energy.

Sometimes, advocacy means killing bad ideas so that alternatives may be explored. In January, 2015, we presented met with the NY City Council, outlining the advantages of offshore wind and argued against a proposed fossil fuel project, which was later vetoed thanks to the efforts of our coalition.

On the morning of April 23rd, over 1,500 people gathered in Albany to to take our three demands directly to Governor Cuomo.

Halt all fracking infrastructure

Institute a rapid and just transition to renewables

Make corporate polluters pay for the damage they’ve done

At the beginning of the day, we listened to residents of Sheridan Avenue tell us of Governor Cuomo’s plan to turn the neighboring steam plant, which sits adjacent to their homes, into a fracked gas power plant to supply the Empire State Plaza, the seat of New York State’s government, with heat and power.

After the spirited rally, we walked to the Capitol with hand made art, singing songs that lifted our spirits as we marched into the Capitol building

Governor Cuomo has committed to "double down by investing in the fight against dirty fossil fuels and fracked gas" in his 2017 State of the State Address. So why is he committing to building a new fracked gas power plant in an Environmental Justice neighborhood to power the Empire State Plaza, the symbolic building of New York government? New York State should use our resources to solve the transition to renewable energy for a healthy climate, resilience and empowered communities. Not further burden people with 30 more years of polluting fossil fuels in our backyard.

We have the solutions! Sane Energy is working to make sure the efforts we work toward with our Renewable Heat Now coalition campaign, that Governor Cuomo and the New York Power Authority can double down by investing in a proven renewable solution!

Justin Nobel Talk on Radon

Oil-and-gas wells produce nearly a trillion gallons of toxic waste a year. A recent investigation by Rolling Stone reporter Justin Nobel shows how this waste could be making workers sick and contaminating communities across America.
In an evening co-presented by the School of Art, Media & Technology and Sane Energy Project, Nobel will speak about his investigation. Assistant Professor of Design and Technology Jess Irish will debut her new short film, "21 Reasons Why 'Natural Gas' Stinks," part of the ongoing Visualizing Pipeline Impacts research project.
A discussion following the presentations will offer direct ways to fight radioactive fracked gas and fracked gas waste here in New York.
Sponsored by the School of Art, Media, and Technology at Parsons School of Design. Co-sponsored with Sane Energy Project, Food & Water Watch and United for Action. And then TAKE ACTION! We have direct ways to fight radioactive fracked gas and fracked gas waste right here in NY!
